Hampshire Schools' Athletic Association
Annual Track & Field Championships 2012
as part of the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Schools' Games
Saturday 16 June at The Military Stadium, Aldershot

Conditions: Cool and strong breezes (so strong that the wind gauge was blown over and broke!) Congratulations to all our athletes competing in difficult conditions.

In the Junior Girls' High Jump Kierra Barker (Basingstoke) set the day's only Championship Best Performance clearing 1.72m first time, her fourth first-time clearance at ESSA National Standard heights (from 1.63m), beating the 1.70m CBP mark of Katie White (E&W) from 1986. She then attempted 1.75m, which would have equalled the Senior CBP! In the Long Jump Devon Brimecome (South-East Hants) beat the Long Jump National Standard, as did Emily Green (Eastleigh & Winchester) in the Discus.

In the Intermediate Girls' High Jump, Eastleigh & Winchester athlete Emma Cowell's best clearance of 1.69m was just one centimetre shy of the National Standard. At the end of the day, as the rain arrived, Emily Jenkinson (Portsmouth) when winning the 300m just missed recording another Entry Standard this year, by a tenth.

Some of the Senior events suffered by the clash with the National Under 20 Championships. In the Boys' High Jump, Alex Cox (New Forest) matched the National Standard. The Hammer only had two competitors, but between them they recorded three National Standard throws as Dan Avery (Eastleigh & Winchester) beat Gary Jones (Andover), who returned to win the Discus title.

In the Intermediate Boys, Matt Aldridge (New Forest) beat the High Jump National Standard by one centimetre, but he was unsuccessful in an attempt to beat Matt Cordy's 20-year old CBP. Sam Adams (Eastleigh & Winchester) was one centimetre short of the Long Jump National Standard; he also recorded an Entry Standard in the Triple Jump. English Schools' Javelin champion Joseph Brown won the Javelin by almost ten metres! The Inter 400m and the Junior Boys' Long Jump were the only events where three athletes recorded entry standards.

Aldershot and District won NINE team trophies, with only Eastleigh and Winchester Senior Girls trophy victory stopping a clean sweep.

With just 22 ESAA Entry Standards recorded at the championships, it was one of the lowest tallies in recent years, but this was definitely due to the awful weather conditions! As over 50 athletes had recorded entry standards, and hopefully more to come in the South-East Schools' Inter-Counties' match, we hope to be sending another strong team to Gateshead next month for the English Schools Championships, the 'Schools Olympics'.

Our thanks, as usual, to all the teachers and officials without whom the championships would not be able to take place. Our thanks again this year to the organiser of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Schools' Games which our championships was a part of.

We hope you continue to enjoy this Olympic year.
