Track and Field Championships:

A report with recommendations for the 2014 championships has been produced by the Officials Committee, Eileen and Terry Williams will ensure this is emailed to the Secretaries.

It was also agreed that competitions for wheel chair athletes should continue being held in the Saucony Hampshire Grand Prix events.

Team Managers:

Graeme Lowndes reported that the visit of Coutances Athletic Club members to compete in the Bupa 5k and Junior Great South Run was a great success. Please see the report and results published on the home page of the county website - www.hampshireathletics.org.uk

Graeme thanked the organisers, Nova International, who provided complimentary entries for the visiting team and the use of a marquee on the day. Graeme said he had great support from families in Hampshire who kindly agreed to be hosts, and the team had a most enjoyable visit.

A question was asked with relation to how the teams will be selected for the SEAA Inter-County Cross-Country Championships on Saturday 14 December, especially if athletes are not able to compete in the second league match.

This information had been published on the county website, but please see below the details:

Selection will be based on athletes' performances in the first two Hampshire League races (Reading and Goodwood). Any athletes who wish to be considered for selection, and are unable to attend these selection races, should contact the team manager, David Vosser.

Joint Technical Officials Report: Eileen & Terry Williams

Congratulations to Janet Smith who won the England Athletics, South East Region, Official of the Year, the National winner being another Starter, Peter Shilling from London.

We held Level 2 Courses in all disciplines at The Sports Academy, Andover on 6th October with 37 attendees of which 22 were from Hampshire and also included 2 from Leicester or the Starter/Markman Course. Our thanks go to the Tutors, Alison Friend, Steve Baldwin and Janet Smith. Unfortunately UKA sent us 16 names of people who indicated interest in becoming an Official at their stand at the Anniversary Games in July but we received this some 3 weeks after our Courses. We contacted them all and await responses to see where we go from there. Also emailed UKA to ask why the delay as it took them 3 months but no response!

Our Officials committee met yesterday and have made the appointments for the County Championships and these will be circulated shortly together with the HSAA Appointments. We have had record responses this year. Our thanks go to Pam Rogers for her invaluable input.

We have summarised the Meeting Reports from the County Track & Field Championships and will be emailing these to Christine, Mike and Richard for their consideration shortly. On the whole comments were positive with just a few ideas for tweaking things to make the Championships even better. The Committee still feel that a Computer programme for seeding would be advantageous. Additionally we have been in contact with Richard and he is prepared to put an Officials section on the website in due course and we will supply him with the relevant information.

Sportshall: Michael Coker

The first 2013-14 Hampshire Sportshall League match took place at Fleming Park on 20 October 2013 with over 180 athletes participating. Match 2 is at Andover Leisure Centre on 24 November 2013. The 2014 Regional competitions have been confirmed as 12 January (U11s) and 23 February (U15/U13) at Burgess Hill. These competitions will go ahead despite Sportshall Associates being adversely affected by UKA loss of Aviva sponsorship. There is no date yet for the 2014 UK Sports Hall Final.

2014 League Dates:

  • 26 January 2014 - Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth
  • 16 March 2014 - Fleming Park, Eastleigh

Development: Michael Coker

The first 2013-14 Hampshire & IOW Coaching Day ran successfully at Portsmouth on 12 October 2013 with excellent feedback from the 72 athletes and 15 coaches attending. 12 of the athletes attending were invited as a direct result of their performances at Hampshire Schools events, and all showed interest in joining Hampshire Clubs. The 2nd Coaching Day is at Andover on 7th December.

The 2013 Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme was launched in September 2013, and c.60 Hampshire athletes have applied (far more than any other sport). The panel meets on 15th November. This Hampshire County Council scheme provides support services to help Hampshire's most talented athletes reach World-Class podiums:- Olympics, Paralympics, World Championships.

We are meeting Saucony on 21st November to plan ahead to 2014 events and monitor the continuing business partnership with Hampshire Athletics.

Please find below summary of some 2013 key Hampshire Athletics Track & Field performances:-

  • Hampshire Schools achieved the best results for many years at the English Schools Championships (Birmingham - 5/6 July 2013). A record total of 17 medals included:- Gold (7) Adam Jones JB HJ; Katya Oldfield JG HJ; Millie Cavanagh JG Shot; Leslie Parkes IB Hammer; IB 4 x 100m; Kierra Barker IG HJ; Nick Percy SB Discus. Silver (6) Andrew Douglas IB PV; Eddie Jenkinson JB Discus; Leanne Davies IG Javelin; Oliver Bromby IB 100m; Jacob Ness IB 400m; Andrew Mead- Briggs IB Discus. Bronze (4) Tom Sear JB High Jump; Jordan Campbell IG Javelin; Charlie Maw IB Pole Vault; Henry Ridgers SB Shot. Additionally Shadine Duquemin, Jersey won gold in the SG Discus.
  • World Youth Championships (Donetsk, Ukraine 10-13 July 2013). Emily Jenkinson, Southampton 6th 800m Semi Final.
  • European U20 Championships (Rieti, Italy 18-21 July 2013). Emilia Gorecka, AFD 1st 3000m; Nick Percy, IOW 2nd Discus; Shadine Duquemin, Jersey 7th Discus
  • European U23 Championships (Tampere, Finland 11-14 July 2013). Isobel Pooley, AFD 4th High Jump; Zane Duquemin, Jersey was 4th in the Shot and 11th in the Discus.
  • Hampshire Clubs fared reasonably well in 2013 National League competition. In the UK Women's League - Southampton were promoted to the Premier Division for 2014; Portsmouth remain in Division 2 after a 5th place finish; Aldershot stay in Division 3 despite an 8th place League finish. In the British Athletics League - Basingstoke finished 7th in Division 1 and are relegated to Division 2 in 2014, where they will join Southampton who finished 4th in 2013. Channel Islands A.C. finished 4th in Division 4.
  • In other senior League competition, Southampton won the SAL Division 1 League competition for the 2nd consecutive year, with Basingstoke 4th and Portsmouth 12th. In Division 2 South, Andover & Overton finished 7th, Havant 14th and Winchester 15th. The SAL is viewed as an ideal competition format in many respects:- regionalised to reduce travel burden; full, but concise event timetable; male/female athletes and coaches/officials in one venue (unlike SML and SWL); Non-scoring athletes are permitted. The SAL had 82 member Clubs in 2013, and is likely to expand further in 2014.
  • In contrast, the new UK Youth Development League is not generally deemed to be working well, with lengthy travel, a drawn out timetable, and very poor attendance in the U20/U17 age group. Fixtures were not 'athlete-friendly', unentertaining for spectators, leading to Officials not supporting the UKYDL.

The Hampshire Wheel Chair Race Group meets monthly with recent increasing numbers at Winchester Stadium. We are currently extending the activity to Portsmouth and Aldershot with new coaches, race chairs and Club support.

Hampshire Athletics are looking to support the Sport England Satellite Clubs programme, where 'satellite' Clubs linked to affiliated Athletics Clubs are set up at School sites. There is likely to be some funding support.
