Mike Williams

Mike WilliamsIt is with deepest regret that we must announce the unexpected and sad passing of Mike Williams, known to many involved with athletics in Hampshire for over 40 years. Mike has been the Hampshire Athletics Honorary Secretary for almost 20 years and, from 2013 until 2018, was the Championship Secretary of the Track & Field Championships which are taking place this weekend.

In the early 1980's he became Secretary of Havant Athletics Club and eventually held both of these Secretary positions together.

Before joining Havant, Mike had been a keen runner at Portsmouth Joggers, where again he was the Club Secretary.

He was a Level 3 Middle Distance coach achieving success with a number of athletes and managed several teams for Havant AC.

Not satisfied with just that connection with his beloved athletics, he was also a Track Official for many years, reaching Level 3 and put that interest to good use in many competitions.

Mike was always keen to make our County Championships the best opportunity for the athletes to perform to the best of their abilities. Mike said "As I arrived at the events early, I offered my services in helping sort out the medals to assist presentations which would take place during the two days. Then I started to help in other ways, selling programmes or helping in registration. I was happy to do this just as long as I could watch my athletes compete. Suddenly I found myself offering to stand as joint Championship Secretary for what I believe are the best county championships in the country."

He was however overall a rather private person and few could say that they knew him well.

We will all definitely miss you Mike.

Mike's funeral service will take place on Friday 15 October at Portchester Crematorium, Upper Cornaway Lane, Portchester, PO16 8NE, at 13:45.

Donations to Havant Athletic Club may be sent to M Coghlan Funeral Directors, Westbury Road, Fareham, PO16 7XU.
